My first introduction to proper wargaming was an advert in Airfix Magazine for an American magazine – Strategy & Tactics – with a game in it. That concept was new to me and I was intrigued. As a birthday present, I was gifted a subscription – starting with issue number 38 – and my life was changed forever.
It was Strategy &Tactics (S&T) which supercharged my interest in gaming and history. The idea that a new game would turn up every couple of months or so was my vision of heaven. The articles acted as a catalyst for me to learn more about the material under discussion. Also, the articles – while not perfect – were far from the boring texts we had to read at school or, even the few history books I had borrowed from the library. History could be interesting, exciting, and stimulating!
S&T was then being published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI). In addition to the magazine games, SPI published others at a frequency never before seen. Of course, I had to buy some of them, too. SPI’s games provided some of the best moments of my life.
I will never be able to repay my debt to S&T and SPI. I can make some small amends by revisiting old S&T issues and old SPI games and engaging in comfortable, rose-tinted nostalgia.
This page contains links to my S&T posts. SPI games published in S&T are not listed separately; go to the relevant S&T issue link.
Note that, for the sake of simplicity, this list also includes links to posts about S&T magazines published after SPI’s demise.
